I generally begin a painting by working on the eye.  From there, I lay in the first bits of color which leaves the painting rather flat (think coloring book).  The third step is to drop in another layer of color emphasizing shape (think back to the grade school shading a sphere project).  That third step is about where I am with this little guy.
